My name is Vikki and I run Sing and Sign Southend.

I started Sing and Sign with my son this year, and loved it so much I decided to start teaching it!

A bit about me is my background is actually as a Registered Veterinary Nurse, but after having my son I realised I wanted a change of career, but I am still super busy keeping all my animals at home entertained.

The best feeling is seeing babies start using signs knowing exactly what they mean! My boys favourite is milk for obvious reasons, plus aeroplane and bird which we use a lot when our for our walks, it's amazing to see how every baby learns in a different way.

My goals with Sing and Sign are to:

    • share Sing and Sign with as many families as I can
    • create a community feel to each term, helping families and babies bond and grow together
    • give tired parents a bit of respite from constantly worrying about their little ones' development

During the classes I sing with you, I teach you some signs to take home and practice, and I talk you through some of the things I've experienced as a new mum, and also have a chat about things we are all still learning!

Please do get in touch (southend@singandsign.co.uk) if you have any questions about Sing & Sign or check out class availability here.

A little bit about what to expect....

    • Which class should I attend?

We have 3 different stages of Sing and Sign which have been developed specifically for your baby's developmental stages.

Sing and Sign Babes classes are for 0 to 5 month olds with their parent/carer. This gentle class explores themes such as eye contact, gesture and anticipation together with lots of cuddles, tickles and some simple signs; all building the framework for good communication and brought to you using our magic ingredient - music!

Sing and Sign Stage 1 is ideal for babies from 6 months old up to around 13 months old and their parent / carer.  Themes include basic signs, nappies & bath time, emotions & bedtime.  You'll learn over 100 signs related to your routines and the sort of things your baby may be interested in, such as animals and vehicles.

It is quite a big step from Stage 1 to Stage 2, so many people come to Stage 1 for at least two terms before attending Stage 2. However, this is also dependent on your baby's age.

Stage 2 is great when your little one is 13+ months, moving about and probably starting to talk (although every baby is different, so there's no hard and fast rule!) as it is more active and interactive.  Themes include weather, opposites, colours and the phonetic alphabet, together with simple counting songs, turn taking, sharing and of course, lots of fun!

    • How long do classes run for?

Babes classes run for about 30 - 40 minutes. Babes very often fall asleep in class, this is completely normal and fine as I am here to teach you when they're that young!

    Stage1 and Stage 2 classes run for about 40 - 45 minutes.

I like to have a little time before each class for chatting and getting to know one another in the class, so it may be worth allowing for an hour.

    • How many people attend Sing and Sign classes?

Class sizes are limited to 11 babies (12 at some larger venues) with their parent/carers, providing a calm and gentle experience.

    • I have twins/triplets - how many places do I pay for?

Twins/Triplets are welcome and only pay for one place for twins or one and half places for triplets. If you are a childminder and have two babies from different families, then a place for each child must be booked and paid for.

    • I have an older child - can they come too?

Older children are only permitted to come at my discretion. They will be expected to sit beside you for the duration of the class, whether joining in the singing and signing or doing their own thing (bring a book, for example). This is to make sure that the other babies in the class feel comfortable and safe, and that the class can run smoothly.

If you'd like to bring a sibling to classes, please keep this in mind and get in touch first.

    • How much does it cost?

All classes cost £90 per term. This includes 10 live classes, a private WhatsApp group for your class and access to the online membership where you can read about the themes of each week and access Sign @ home plus videos showing all of our signs.

Sing and Sign @home is available for stages 1 and 2 for £50. This includes 10 weekly streamed classes, plus Gold membership for Stage 1 and Premium membership for Stage 2.

  • Nurseries

Sing and Sign has an excellent Nursery Affiliation Programme which will train staff on their own premises at a time to suit all. We will teach staff a selection of signs, tailor made to the nursery's individual requirements and design an Individual Action Plan to inspire staff and make signing fun and easy to incorporate. Following training, the nursery will receive a Certificate of Sing and Sign Affiliation together with ongoing access to our signing resources and a complimentary package of products.

It is a great way to make sure that your child is getting the best support and consistency to learn and use the signs as they grow.

If your baby attends nursery or you know of a childcare facility that would be interested in receiving further information, please do pass our details on, or contact us at southend@singandsign.co.uk.
