As a qualified teacher with many years experience of teaching both in mainstream and children with special / additional communication needs, I am passionate about helping people find their voice in whichever way they can and would always have signed with my baby. When I myself became a mum, I straightaway looked for a baby signing class; both for Emily to find other babies to play and interact with and for me to meet other mums. That is when I discovered Sing and Sign!
I chose Sing and Sign over other options out there because it is not only so easy to do, it's so much fun too! It is perfect for the babies needs at that age and is so functional; having a song or rhyme to sign for all the activities in your babies day gives a context to the signs, making it easier to remember them and helping you easily incorporate signing into your day. When your little one tells you something that you didn't know through signing, it's just amazing!
My little girl loved every minute - not only of the classes, but of the excellent supporting DVD's (another great memory jogger!), CDs in the car and the lovely books! Jessie Cat is still her favourite toy and goes everywhere with us! At 20 months, Emily had over 300 signs, which she used in conjunction with words and at 2 she had dropped most of the signs and was speaking in lovely, fluent long sentences. Jessie Cat has played a massive part in helping her achieve that! Research shows that every game of peek-a-boo develops thousands of synapses in the brain, so if the squeals of delight aren't enough, there's the perfect excuse for another game of 'where is Jessie?'!
So many people saw Emily signing and asked 'does signing not stop her talking?', but as soon as they heard her rabbit away (so often with her own observations too), they realised the answer is anything but! [for more fascinating info on the research into why baby signing works, see the 'Baby signing - learning to talk' tab above].
Signing with Emily through the Sing and Sign programme has been the most rewarding experience for us all; it gave us a window into her world that we just never would have had. We could never have predicted that she would feel / notice some of the things she has communicated to us! And this deeper level of communication before speech has been priceless to us and immeasurably beneficial to Emily; I want to help other families experience that too!

Sing and Sign Babes From birth, build the framework for good communication with your little one through song, music and sign! Babes is a gentle, pre-stage 1 music class with sensory stimulation for little ones up to 6 months of age; with weekly themes, music genres, instruments and an introduction to baby signing relevant to your little ones age and development. Lots of ideas for you to take home too, so you can really make the most of those early days together :)
Babes is more flexible to reflect the young age of the babies. It is bookable in either a term of 10 weeks (£66) or whenever you are ready to leave the house, please just get in touch! Classes last for 1 hour, with 30 - 35 minutes of class and then toys and time to chat, make friends and ask questions. The Jessie Cat Songbook is a lovely accompaniment to Babes and comes with two CD's; one lovely listening CD to accompany the book and one which lets you create your own mini Babes session at home. It is not at all compulsory, but if you would like one of these, simply add to your basket on checkout or ask in class :)
Stage 1 is generally for babies from 5 - 15 months and covers the basic needs and routines for a baby at that age, such as meal time, bath time, nappy changing and bed time. It also offers signs to support babies possible interests, such as animals, transport and toys etc. There are over 100 signs covered during the weeks of the baby class. We usually recommend that you attend two terms of this stage before moving on to stage 2; stage 1 and stage 1 advanced. Even if you are only able to do one term, that is enough for it to work and set you well on your way to communicating with your baby.
Stage 2 is generally for toddlers aged 14+ months and covers more complex signs and concepts such as feelings, colours, the weather, simple counting and the alphabet. By now, you will probably have done two terms of stage 1 (exceptions apply) and your little one may be starting to toddle (if not run!). You both know the routine and plenty of signs and your little one may be attempting their own conversations with a few words. Well, now the fun really begins! Not only do we have new concepts and signs relevant to their increasing interests and awareness, but this is their opportunity to move around with the music and become an extremely active participant in class. Jessie Cat even has a great song to help with potty training!
If your little one is stage 2 age but has never done any signing or if they have communication needs, please do still get in touch - it's not too late! There are still lots of benefits to teaching signing before they are ready to speak or speak more clearly and it can greatly help lessen frustration during the 'tricky twos' if they can at least express some of their needs / feelings. Emily is noticably calmer than her non-signing peers because there is already not much that she can't make us understand.
About Stage 1 & 2 Classes
Stage 1 & 2 classes run for an hour and we sing and sign for approximately 30 - 40 minutes. They are friendly, relaxed and lots of fun! Class venues have been chosen to help your baby / toddler engage and allow you to relax if they want to potter about a bit! We know that babies and toddlers don't like to be still and we don't expect them to! And don't worry, because it's amazing how much they still pick up when wandering and will still be learning. They always come back when the props bags, musical instruments or Jessie make an appearance ;) At the end of the session, there is a chance to practice any songs / signs you are unsure of or ask me any questions you may have, while the little ones interact and explore some toys. We learn all the signs through our catchy action songs, so don't worry if you can't sing - you don't have to :)
To benefit fully from our classes, at stage 1 and 2 we book you in for a full term of 10 - 12 weeks (depending on term dates) so that we can build your signing vocabulary gradually, week by week.
The cost for your initial stage 1 or 2 class is £66 (stage 1 & 2 will be a 10 week term). Although not at all compulsory, if you don't already have it and would like it, add a one-off £14.99 for your stage 1 or 2 DVD. Great for reinforcing what we've done in class and lovely to share with others who care for your little one so they can join in too! Just choose the appropriate option on checkout.
I am confident your little one will love Sing and Sign as much as mine has! However, I offer a no risk guarantee; so if after the first session you decide it is not for you, a refund can be given (see terms and conditions).
How Many People Attend Sing and Sign Classes?
Class sizes are strictly limited to 12 babies (fewer at some venues) with their parent/carer. Venues are purposely chosen to give the babies maximum chance of engagement; but this means that space can be tight so, apart from on special occasions (e.g. Mummy / Daddy having a day off, Granny coming to stay for the week etc), we have to limit places to one adult per child.
I Have Twins / Triplets - How Many Places Do I Pay For?
Twins/Triplets are welcome and only pay for one place if there is only one adult. If you are bringing Dad / Granny or another adult helper each week, you will need to book 2 places.
I Have An Older Child - Can They Come Too?
Pre-school aged siblings are welcome at Stage 1 & 2 at no extra cost (assuming one adult, as with twins). I know how difficult it is sometimes to juggle activities to suit children close together in age! Older siblings always enjoy the singing and we involve them as much as possible, although we do ask parents / carers to be considerate of the fact that the classes are not aimed at the older child and that they are responsible for not allowing them to run about or dominate the group.
Please let me know when you book if you have siblings attending, as it limits the number of places I have available.
It really isn't appropriate for under 3 year old siblings to attend Babes classes as the babies are so tiny. If this causes you a problem, let me know and we can have a chat about your individual circumstances.
If you are bringing a friend's child as well as your own or are a Childminder bringing more than one child, please contact me to discuss your individual situation.
If you are "home-schooling" and have a school-aged child attending the class, I charge an extra £10 per school-aged child.

Nursery Affiliation ProgrammeAre you a nursery?Sing and Sign has an excellent Nursery Affiliation Programme which will train staff on their own premises at a time to suit all. We will teach staff a selection of signs, tailor made to the nursery's individual requirements and design an Individual Action Plan to inspire staff and make signing fun and easy to incorporate. Following training, the nursery will receive a Certificate of Sing and Sign Affiliation together with ongoing access to our signing resources and a complimentary package of products. If your baby attends nursery or you know of a childcare facility that would be interested in receiving further information, please contact me for details.Sing and Sign Affiliated Nurseries:Puddleducks, Pewsey - www.puddleducks-pewsey.comSunflowers at Grafton - www.sunflowers-grafton.org.ukAre you a childcare provider? Many parents are now signing with their babies and looking for childcare which can offer the improved level of communication their baby is enjoying at home. For the last nine years Sing and Sign teachers have been offering workshops for staff and follow up consultancy to nurseries interested in introducing baby signing in their baby and toddler rooms. Our comprehensive Nursery Affiliation Programme helps staff make the most of communicating with the little ones in their care.Sing and Sign benefits the adults too! Carers themselves also benefit from the greater understanding and lessening of frustration that baby signing can offer. Your nursery staff will find it easy to adopt some simple signs with the right encouragement and motivation. As babies find added comfort in the reinforcing of routines and familiar words it can make a rewarding difference! The Sing and Sign approach is renowned among parents and professionals and highly regarded. Our material has been used for I CAN’s Chatterbox Challenge for many years, we have run classes in Mothercare and for numerous Sure Start services and children's centres across the UK. Our signs are largely compatible with Makaton and similar sign supporting systems based on the signs of BSL. Incorporating the Sing and Sign approach will also be of great benefit to any members of your staff currently using signs with children in your care who have special needs and encourage inclusivity. I am also a qualified teacher with many years of both mainstream and special school experience.
