Sing and Sign baby signing classes in... Southampton

  • About Me

    Welcome

    Hi my name is Heidi Cook and I have been a Sing and Sign teacher for 16 years for the Southampton area (including Romsey, Totton, Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford).

    I have three children and my middle son was born with glue ear. I learnt sign language from a book to help me communicate, but it was really hard as the signs were quite complicated for a baby. We did learn a few signs and I could understand what he needed. When my daughter was born, her hearing was fine, but I wanted to teach her to baby sign as we had all benefited from it before. I was delighted to find Sign and Sign.

    We started classes with Christine when my daughter was six months old and within a month she learnt her first sign 'milk'. By the time she was eighteen months she could sign anything from what she wanted to eat, when she had a pain and where she wanted to go that day. At the age of two my daughter was very advanced with her speech.

    When I mentioned how much I loved baby signing and how beneficial it had been, Christine asked if I would like to become a teacher. I jumped at the chance! Fifteen years on and I still love teaching Sing and Sign.

    Classes are very relaxed and good fun! We keep them small (max 12 per class) so you and your baby can enjoy the social aspect and isn't too overwhelming.

    We offer three age appropriate classes:

    Babes
    For babies that are 0-5 months and not yet mobile (rolling over and sitting is fine). This is a 5 week term and we run two in each school term. This is pre-Stage 1 and is a gentle introduction to baby signing. We focus on anticipation, facial expression and eye contact while using sensory stimulation, music and props to build the framework for good communication.

    Stage 1
    For babies aged 5-13 months. This is a 10 week term for babies that are more aware and maybe sitting up and ready to enjoy the music, toys and social aspect of the class. If you have only completed one term and your baby is younger than 14 months, it is advisable to do another Stage 1 class as the first term helps you to learn the signs and get used to using them and the second term for your baby to fully join in.  You can learn over 100 signs in stage 1 but because the classes are fun and relaxed it won't feel like learning at all!

    Stage 2
    For older babies aged 14-24 months.  This is a 10 week term for older babies that are toddling around. We get them more involved with action songs, extra props and cover concepts such as foods, colours, weather and even phonics while still using our key ingredient..music. This class is also useful if your child is speech delayed or just loves music and singing!

    We know babies don't like to stay still so we don't expect them to! They are welcome to roam around the room if they want to - they will still be learning (you'd be surprised how much they can pick up whilst wandering!) When Jessie Cat, instruments or the prop bag appear they soon come back!

    * For Stages 1 & 2

        Here's two short videos to show what a class is like and what your child could potentially sign.
