  Welcome to Sing and Sign in Orkney

  

  Hello, I'm Susan and I have had great fun teaching Sing and Sign Classes in Orkney since 2007!

  We began using some signs with our youngest daughter when she was 9 months old and a few weeks later she astounded us by producing her first sign, and we were hooked!

  This special form of communication gave us a fascinating insight into her world, as well as inspiring her speech from a very early age, in fact she hasn't stopped talking since!

  Now she's a teenager - and I'm still a huge advocate of the benefits of signing with babies, in fact I believe parents and babies are really missing out if they don't sign.

  Classes are small and very informal - babies don't have to sit still during the class , they can enjoy the songs, music and making friends whilst their Parents learn the signs!

  Sing and Sign Babes class - this is a gentle 5 week course for the youngest babies from around 6 weeks to six months old, helping build the framework for early communication. Although we introduce a few signs at this stage to give parents some practice, the emphasis is on face to face contact between you and your baby with minimal distraction.

  Our Stage 1 classes are ideal for babies who are over 7 months old and can sit up independently - here we introduce some gestures (signs) that parents can use to help develop their baby's understanding of everyday language and therefore, nurture their speech development. We teach through song and music so it's a lot of fun too! 

  Stage 2 classes are for toddlers who are between 15 months and 2 years and who have either completed 2 Stage 1 terms or whose parents have been signing at home and have the basics in place.

  Through your Sing and Sign online membership you will also have access to a full term of Sing and Sign @Home online classes - these can also be booked as a stand alone alternative to coming to class if your working arrangements mean you can't get to class or other circumstances make it difficult - being based on one of the Islands for instance, please get in touch for more details.
